A family Story.

Meet Alexandra

I started baking for my family, I wanted to share with them the childhood memories I cherish.
— Alexandra, Founder & Baker

In 2012, we journeyed from France to California, drawn by my husband's wine industry career. While we embraced our new life, the absence of authentic French bread, especially the beloved baguette, tugged at our hearts.

Fueled by nostalgia and a passion for quality bread, I embarked on a mission to master breadmaking, an unexpected path given my background as a certified nurse-midwife. Armed with cherished memories of perfect baguettes, I began my journey in September 2013, gradually inching closer to recreating that iconic French flavor.

Serendipity led us back to France for a year, where I honed my skills through an internship in a boulangerie, affirming the harmony between my process and the classic French approach. It wasn't just about refining my craft; it unveiled a path to a new life—a life where work could bring joy, both to me and others.

Upon returning to Santa Rosa, I was ready to launch Sarmentine, leaving my midwifery career behind. Yet, my new profession retained its connection to the old. Crafting bread, much like nurturing a child, requires patience, care, and consistency. I still use the same sourdough starter I began with in 2012—it's become a cherished part of my journey.

Sarmentine, named after a specialty Bordeaux baguette, marries old traditions with new terroir. Daily bread-making has become my canvas, my medium to weave joy into people's lives. Seeing children's smiles as they spotted me with my basket of bread after school warms my heart, reminding me of the joy and memories that bread can create.

I recall the boulangerie trips with my parents, buying baguettes for dinner or croissants for my snack. The buttery aroma and taste of the crust still lingers. Childhood memories are treasures, shaping who we become. I'm honored to contribute to these cherished moments every day.

With Sarmentine, you're not just tasting bread; you're savoring memories, embracing centuries-old traditions, and becoming a part of an ever-evolving story.

Why the name Sarmentine?

Sarmentine is the name of a specialty baguette from Bordeaux, made with sesame and with a specific shape: fork ends. The name is coming from the French word "Sarment", used to describe the canes that are removed from the grape vines during annual pruning. Bordeaux's bakers wanted to dedicate this sesame baguette to their local wine region.

I wanted to bring this special bread from my French origins to my new home, here, in the wine region of Sonoma County, marrying old traditions with new terroir.
